HIGHER EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

The scholarship program was established by the church as a way to encourage the youth of our church to continue their education and to continue their association with the church after high school. The Higher Education scholarship is a monetary gift of love from First United Methodist Church and its members. It is used to help defray the cost of tuition, fees, books, supplies. The scholarships are given freely and equally, with no obligation for repayment However, it is intended to plant a seed which at sometime later will be harvested.

Recipients must be full members of the church, must submit verification of school enrollment, and must complete an application form. All scholarships must be renewed annually, not to exceed 4 or 5 years. The program is open to traditional and nontraditional students, full and part time. Half of the amount is given in August and the other half is given in January. The recipient is asked to personally accept one of the two checks during Sunday worship.

Funding for the scholarships is received from the interest income from memorial certificates of deposit, contributions throughout the year, and ongoing fund raising projects. Administration of the program is carried out by the Scholarship Committee appointed by the Charge Conference.

COLLEGE MINISTRY

The goals of the College Ministry team include challenging the mind in integrating faith and academics, nurturing the spirit through fellowship, study and service, and providing opportunities for service and involvement with the church family. The team makes an effort to reach out and serve the spiritual needs of WV Wesleyan College students through the regular worship service on Sunday morning. Students are also given opportunities to become involved in the life of the church by teaching Sunday School and participating in the chancel choir, handbells, and special fellowship events.

Another goal of the College Ministry Team is to provide opportunities for contacting and nurturing church family members in colleges away from home. This is done through the Reach Out and Touch ministry, which provides cards, letters, phone calls and care packages for FUMC students who are away at college.
