This is a project which started in January, 2003, in response to pleas of a high-school-age youth delegation called Mission of Peace who, in the process of visiting Managua, Nicaragua, found families living and eating from the city dump. Cheryl Avery, now Executive Director of the project, responded and with the assistance of delegations and work teams from around the United States has helped families move from the city dump to a healthy environment where they can learn new life skills for independence. They learn to build their own house, grow their own food, read and write, start a small business, social and parenting skills, problem-solving, financial planning— and that God loves each one of them. After five years of training, the families become owners of their houses and about two acres of farm land.

First UMC supports this project through donations from our Salad Luncheons and special collections.
